One-Stop Employment Services Begin June 1

On June 1, the Department of Advanced Education and Skills will assume responsibility for employment services throughout the province. This move will provide a flexible and accessible one-stop system, ensure effective and responsive services and help secure employment opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

“The Department of Advanced Education and Skills was created to focus on supplying qualified graduates and skilled workers for a fast-growing economy,” said the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. “The department has a network of offices throughout the province to assist people in their efforts to secure a job. On June 1, these offices will provide employment services to any Newfoundlander and Labradorian looking to seize opportunities to secure a job.”

Currently, most EI-eligible individuals have to work with both a third-party service provider and an Advanced Education and Skills office to obtain many of the supports needed for training, upgrading, work experience, and employment.

Departmental staff can assist with career planning, setting career goals, employment counselling, labour market information, job search, resume writing, interview preparation, and identifying suitable services and programs that support employment goals. People who can benefit from these employment supports include job seekers, employers, post-secondary students, parents, new Canadians, older workers, labour and industry groups, and anyone looking for career and employment help.

To help ensure a smooth transfer and minimize duplication of information gathering, departmental staff are currently in the process of obtaining necessary client information and electronic files from third-party providers of employment services. Letters have also been mailed to clients informing them of the changes in service delivery.

Employment services will continue to be delivered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization to Support Women Entrepreneurs, the Women in Resource Development Corporation, organizations that provide Supportive Employment Assistance for persons with disabilities, and Self-Employment agencies that assist people starting their own business.
