Over $579,000 for the Conservation Corps Green Team Season

Youth and students can take advantage of employment opportunities in environmental conservation and cultural heritage projects throughout Newfoundland and Labrador as the result of over $579,000 provided by the Department of Advanced Education and Skills for the Conservation Corps Green Team. This funding will benefit over 100 youth, aged 16 to 30, throughout the province.

“Summer employment is a great way for youth to establish positive work habits and gain valuable skills that will assist them in gaining future employment,” said the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. “This funding of over $579,000 will continue to support youth in gaining employment experience and help build on our economic growth. Since its inception, Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador’s Green Team Program has provided more than 2,100 young people with important skills and experiences that reach beyond the skills provided through a traditional summer job.”

Projects offered for the Conservation Corps Green Team Season include, but are not limited to, stream restoration and fish enhancement, wetland conservation, trail development, waste management and community gardens. Conservation Corps teams receive training in first aid, conflict resolution, occupational health and safety, media relations, public speaking, and a variety of other useful skills.

Regional supervisors for the program have been hired and trained and are currently recruiting for Green Team positions in their respective regions by posting job ads, visiting schools and post-secondary institutions and attending municipal events.

“We are very excited to be starting our 21st Green Team season,” said Darren Feltham, Director of Programs for Conservations Corps Newfoundland and Labrador. “Our training allows us to equip our employees with valuable skills that will help them today and in the future. We would like to thank our many community, corporate and government supporters that will be part of this year’s program by providing important employment opportunities to youth in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
