Budget 2013: Investing in the Future Skilled Workforce
for a Sustainable Tomorrow

Opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have never been brighter as the result of a thriving economy, business growth and major development projects. To meet the growing demand for skilled workers, and to ensure residents are equipped to seize opportunities in the province’s vibrant economy, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is investing more than $42 million through Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future.

“This government continues to take sound and decisive action to help provide employment for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” said the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. “With a demand for skilled labour fueled by massive developments, which have been championed by our government, we must work to ensure a strong labour force is available to meet all future demand.”

To help prepare for the increasing demand for labour, Budget 2013 will provide $5.2 million to support apprenticeship and trades. The Provincial Government will also develop new approaches for educational upgrading and employment supports that will help people find employment. This includes measures to change the current delivery model for Adult Basic Education and modify the Income Support program to improve focus on providing recipients with enhanced employment services to better assist and inform their job search activities.
