Minister Clarifies Media Report on Hiring of External Consultant

The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, today clarified misinformation contained in a media report on the hiring of former Auditor General John Noseworthy as a consultant by the department. Mr. Noseworthy was contracted to complete an assessment of current programming and Business Transformation for the Department of Advanced Education and Skills.

The media report wrongly alleges that rules and process were not appropriately followed in the hiring of Mr. Noseworthy. In fact, Minister Shea noted, the rules and processes contained in the Guidelines Covering the Hiring of External Consultants, were clearly followed.

“As a former Auditor General, John Noseworthy is a uniquely qualified individual and any assertion that the rules and processes concerning his hiring as a consultant were not followed is completely wrong,” said Minister Shea. “In special circumstances, there are occasions when the Provincial Government will engage the services of individuals to carry out work that requires exceptional skills, knowledge and experience. Mr. Noseworthy, with his distinguished track record in the public service reviewing program effectiveness, managing projects, and his in-depth knowledge of government, was the most ideal candidate for this work.”
