Christmas Lights Across Canada Ceremony Set for Tomorrow

The annual Christmas tree lighting at Confederation Hill in St. John’s will take place tomorrow (Thursday, December 6) as part of the 2012 Christmas Lights Across Canada celebrations.

“Tomorrow night, our special guests will help us welcome the holiday season with this annual tradition,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works. “As we light thousands of lights along Confederation Hill and Prince Philip Drive, we help mark the beginning of the festive season here in the capital city, and we contribute to the national evening of festivities taking place across the country.”

Capital cities throughout Canada are brought together by the annual celebration of Christmas Lights Across Canada. It is an annual holiday event that forms a symbolic link between Canada’s provinces and territories.

The spectacular display in St. John’s will be comprised of more than 60,000 lights that will illuminate Confederation Hill and Prince Philip Drive during the holiday season. Through Charting Our Course: Climate Change Action Plan 2011, the Provincial Government recognizes the importance of leading by example in improving energy efficiency, and as part of this commitment, will use LED lights in this holiday display for the fourth consecutive year.

“I invite members of the public to join us on Confederation Hill as we flick the switch and enjoy the show,” said Minister Davis.

This year’s event will begin at 6:15 p.m. and feature the Elizabeth Park Elementary School Choir and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band. Refreshments will follow in the lobby of Confederation Building.
