Road Drainage Improvements Scheduled for Burin Peninsula

Improvements will be made to the highway drainage systems across the Burin Peninsula as the Provincial Government continues to advance the 2012 Provincial Roads Improvement Program. These improvements will involve an overall investment of $645,000 to enhance road infrastructure in the region.

“This government is committed to sustainable transportation infrastructure that meets the social and economic needs of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and annual maintenance work is an important part of that commitment,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This work will see improvements to the drainage infrastructure, such as culverts, at points throughout the Burin Peninsula, thereby supporting the integrity of the road network in this region.”

Farrell’s Excavating Limited has been awarded the tender for this work. As part of the tender, improvements will take place at various locations along Route 210 and Route 215, as well as at locations in Boat Harbour West, Brookside, Spanish Room and Bulls Cove.

“Maintenance work such as this is an important part of ensuring a sustainable road network,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin - Placentia West. “I am pleased to see this work progress, which will help strengthen the foundations of the regional highway system as a whole.”

Drainage improvements will also take place at locations in Winterland, Garnish and Fortune. As part of this tender, a project including asphalt and shoulder repair work will also take place in Point au Gaul.

“These improvements will help promote the longevity of our highway system,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Grand Bank. “These roads serve as connections for commerce and services, and these projects will help ensure these roads continue to meet the needs of our communities.”

Also included in the tender is the paving of the approach to the government wharf in Bay L’Argent.

“I am pleased that this paving at the wharf in Bay L’Argent will take place,” said Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue. “Many people use the area to access the ferry service and fishermen also use this facility to land their catch. This paving will improve clean-up conditions and allow the wharf area to better serve all users.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, including $60.1 million in continued investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program. This investment is supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
