The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation:

Affordable Housing Units to Receive Renovations in Deer Lake

Four Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) affordable housing units in Deer Lake will be renovated as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to invest in social housing throughout the province.

“As we continue to advance the NLHC annual modernization and improvement program, more of our social housing units in communities around Newfoundland and Labrador receive enhancements that will maintain them for the long term,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “This government is committed to maintaining affordable housing that meets the needs of people with low incomes, and the upgrades made through this investment will ensure the continuation of quality affordable housing for families in Deer Lake.”

Renovations will be completed through an investment of $190,000. A contract has been awarded to EJB Contracting Ltd. to carry out the work. The renovations include siding, window, door and roofing replacements, and the installation of new ventilation systems. The anticipated completion date for this project is December 2012.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
