NLHC Affordable Housing Investments Continue in Central Newfoundland

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded contracts valued at more than $103,000 to renovate nine affordable housing units in three communities in central Newfoundland.

“These renovations build upon the significant modernization and improvement work completed to date, which is helping to maintain and improve our social housing in the central region,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “These current improvements will help ensure a continued supply of quality affordable housing options throughout the province.”

J & J Enterprises Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $48,000 to renovate one unit in La Scie. The work includes siding, window, door, and roofing replacement, as well as new insulation for improved energy efficiency. These types of building renovation projects support the commitments in the Provincial Government action plans focused on climate change and energy efficiency approaches. New bathroom fixtures, steps, decks, and ramp repairs are also included in the project.

One affordable housing unit in Beachside, Notre Dame Bay, will also undergo renovations which include roofing, siding, window, and door replacements. New insulation, plumbing and fixtures will also be installed. Norseman Contractors Inc. has been awarded a $24,000 contract to complete this work.

“Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s renovation work has become an essential part of this government’s commitment to social housing,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale. “These projects will enhance these properties, which is important for both for tenants and the neighbourhoods.”

In Grand Falls-Windsor, J & J Enterprises Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $31,000 to upgrade seven units. Renovations include new walkways, driveways and decks, and ramp repairs.

“Our government is dedicated to providing social housing that meets the needs of people with low incomes,” said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South. “These current renovations will help enhance these affordable homes so they can continue to provide comfortable housing options for tenants for the long term.”

Work in these three communities is scheduled to be completed this fall.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province wide.
