Road Work Continues on Avalon Peninsula

Communities on the Avalon Peninsula will benefit from road and culvert repairs as the Department of Transportation and Works continues to advance the 2012 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

“Important maintenance work will be completed on roads and highways throughout the province this construction season as part of the $60 million Provincial Roads Improvement Program,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This project will see road upgrades and drainage system repairs that will directly benefit communities and help maintain the integrity of transportation links on the Avalon Peninsula.”

A tender has been called that will include upgrading and paving of approximately 1.3 kilometres of Route 70 between Salmon Cove and Perry’s Cove. Repaving will also take place on a section of Route 74, Heart’s Content Barrens.

“I am pleased to see this work will be completed on Route 70 and the Heart’s Content Barrens,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde. “These are welcome upgrades to well-travelled routes, and are important projects that will help maintain a quality road network in our region.”

Upgrading and paving of two sections of Route 72, Bareneed Road is also included in the tender.

“This government is committed to maintaining road infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and I am pleased to see this work will be completed in our area,” said Glenn Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave. “There is a significant amount of commercial activity that takes place in the area and government’s recognition of its importance to the area’s economy is appreciated.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, including $60.1 million in continued investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program. This investment is supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
