Exploits River Bridge Repairs Announced

The Exploits River Bridge, an important link to tourism and recreation opportunities for Grand Falls-Windsor and surrounding communities, will receive substantial improvements this fall as part of road work taking place throughout the province. The bridge provides access to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre on the Exploits River, as well as the Sandy Badger Moose Management Area.

“The improvements that will be made through this project ensure this bridge will serve the people of the region for the long term,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This project is an example of how this government continues to invest in transportation infrastructure that meets the social and economic needs of our communities.”

A tender has been called to replace decking and railing, and also repair the bridge substructure. The work is scheduled to begin after the annual closure of the Salmonid Interpretation Centre in September. The bridge will remain open for the majority of each day, and any temporary closures will be advertised locally.

“This bridge is an important piece of infrastructure that provides access to an engaging tourist site and a wilderness area enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts throughout the region,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans. “This project shows the Provincial Government’s commitment to addressing community needs through investments in the provincial transportation network.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, including $60.1 million in continued investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program. This investment is supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
