Road Work and Ferry Terminal Modifications Coming to Northeastern Newfoundland

Road work continues in northeastern Newfoundland this construction season as the Department of Transportation and Works continues its annual Provincial Roads Improvement Program with more than $60 million in province-wide infrastructure investments.

“Every year, our government makes significant investments in ground and marine transportation infrastructure through the Provincial Roads Improvement Program,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This investment is a good example of how we pursue both highway and wharf rehabilitation, which benefits our coastal and rural communities.”

Culvert installation, ditching, and asphalt repair will be included in a tender call for road work taking place on sections of Route 346 and Route 340-46 on New World Island. Enhancements that include lane expansion and paving will also take place at the Fogo Island-Change Islands ferry terminal parking area in Farewell.

“This work will see welcome repairs to roads that are travelled everyday on New World Island,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and MHA for The Isles of Notre Dame. “As well, the work planned for the Fogo Island - Change Islands ferry terminal in Farewell will upgrade this important facility.”

Culvert installation, ditching and asphalt repair will also take place at locations on Route 320 between Greenspond intersection and Valleyfield intersection.

“Our government continues to invest in the maintenance of the highway system throughout rural Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North. “By investing in our transportation network, our government is showing its continued commitment to our communities and our economy.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, including $60.1 million in continued investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program. This investment is supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
