Road Improvements Planned for Eastern Newfoundland

Highways throughout eastern Newfoundland will undergo work this construction season as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador invests in asphalt and culvert repairs.

“An efficient highway system is vital to the movement of people and goods around our province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “A significant amount of work will be completed with this tender which will ensure roads and their drainage systems throughout the region continue to perform as intended.”

A tender has been called that includes work, such as ditching, asphalt repair and culvert replacement, on sections of highway near several communities in the District of Terra Nova. In Bloomfield, approximately 2.3 kilometres of Route 233 will undergo resurfacing and culvert replacement. Work will also take place on Route 233, Lethbridge, and Route 233-10, Musgravetown, as well as on a section of the TCH near Glovertown.

“This is a significant investment which will see asphalt and culvert repairs in these and other areas throughout the region,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “This work will help with the overall enhancement of our highways to the benefit of all who travel our roads.”

Work will also include asphalt repair and culvert replacement on a section of Route 235 near Summerville, as well as rehabilitation work that includes ditching repairs and new culverts on a section of Route 235-30 at Spillar’s Cove.

“Our government is committed to maintaining the highway network throughout the province,” said Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South. “The work to be completed in this tender is designed to improve the drainage system of these sections of road as well as maintain the asphalt surfaces. Such work will help ensure the integrity of the road network into the future.”

Resurfacing and culvert replacement will also take place on a section of Route 201, Long Cove.

“Culvert replacement and asphalt repair is a key part of maintaining the quality of our roadways and I am pleased to see this work scheduled for our region,” said Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity includes an investment of $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, including $60.1 million in continued investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program. This investment is supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
