Social Housing Renovations Continue in Corner Brook

Renovations to social housing are continuing in Corner Brook as the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation awards a contract valued at $116,000 to Appraisal Construction Ltd. to renovate four social housing units on Balsam Avenue.

“This work is a continuation of the significant modernization and revitalization upgrades underway in communities across the province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “Upgrades through our annual modernization and improvement program, such as this work in Corner Brook, help ensure that social housing continues to effectively serve tenants into the future.”

The work involves siding, window, door and ventilation system replacement and is expected to be complete in August 2012.

“This work adds to the ongoing transformation of social housing neighbourhoods in Corner Brook,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “These renovations are not only an investment in homes, but also an investment in the entire community.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
