Social Housing in Conception Bay South to be Renovated

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) will invest $71,000 in renovations to two social housing units in Conception Bay South as it continues the 2012 modernization and improvement program in communities across the province. Xtreme Renos and Construction Ltd. has been awarded the contract to perform the upgrades.

“As modernization of social housing continues throughout the province, we are able to see the benefits this work brings,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “These upgrades help maintain these homes as comfortable units for tenants, and investments in social housing enhance the overall well-being of the community.”

Work on the units will include siding, roofing, window and door replacements, new steps and decks, ramp repairs, as well as the installation of new energy-saving heat recovery ventilators. The anticipated completion date for the work is September 2012.

“This work will give these homes a much longer life and ensure that we maintain an adequate supply of affordable housing,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Conception Bay South. “It is obvious through these continued renovations and repairs that our provincial social housing plan is making a difference.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
