Highways in Central Newfoundland to Undergo Roadwork

Two highways in central Newfoundland will undergo roadwork as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador moves forward with an investment of just over $60 million in the 2012 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

“Maintenance and enhancement of our provincial highways is underway this construction season as we advance our annual roads program,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Across Newfoundland and Labrador, our government is investing in the future of the highway network by executing projects that will improve the overall transportation system in our province.”

A tender is set to be called this weekend for the rehabilitation of approximately 2.3 kilometres of Route 390 from the Trans Canada Highway to Indian Brook Bridge.

“This road is the route by which numerous communities access the Trans Canada Highway,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte - Springdale. “It is an important transportation link in the region and I am pleased to see this rehabilitation work take place.”

A tender will also be called for work to be done on approximately 1.5 kilometres of Port Anson Road (Route 381).

“The roads in our region are vital to the movement of people and goods,” said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Green Bay South. “This project will improve this section of highway for the benefit of travellers and businesses alike.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity includes an investment of $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, including $60.1 million in continued investment in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program. This investment is supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
