Crestview Avenue Revitalization Making Great Progress

Renovations continue in Corner Brook’s Crestview Avenue neighbourhood as the area undergoes a multi-year revitalization plan. Approximately $1.5 million has been invested to continue major renovations on another 52 units over the coming months, including new doors, windows, siding, roofing, fencing, and some interior renovations, as well as exterior painting for 87 units.

“Crestview Avenue neighbourhood is among the earliest public housing property built in the province, and it is quite exciting to see this remarkable transformation,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “These renovations have brought about very positive change. It is very clearly becoming a neighbourhood residents are proud of and there is a renewed sense of respect for the community. Needless to say, we are pleased with the progress being made.”

Since 2008, approximately $6.7 million has been invested in the Crestview Avenue area. By spring of 2013 upgrades will be completed on 60 per cent of the homes. The substantial redevelopment also includes a $889,000 renovation and expansion of Dunfield Park Community Centre.

“I am pleased to see the progress being made in the Crestview Avenue neighbourhood,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “This is a very significant project for NLHC, and the work being done here will make a difference in the lives of tenants. The NLHC maintains thousands of rental properties throughout the province and ensures adequate levels of social housing will continue to be available for families with low incomes.”

Crestview Avenue is one of several multi-year redevelopment plans undertaken by NLHC, which includes other older and higher-density neighbourhoods such as Froude and Cashin Avenues in St. John’s.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
