House of Assembly Passes Motion Outlining Commitment to Affordable Housing

A resolution reiterating the Provincial Government’s commitment to affordable housing was passed in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, June 20.

“This government has taken a leadership role on the issue of affordable housing and social housing in our province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “Not only do we invest significantly in our social housing units, we invest in projects with community partners to create comfortable homes for those with low incomes and for those with the greatest need. Through many programs overseen by the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, we help people, especially seniors, stay in their own homes for longer. These programs and services are the cornerstone on which this government will continue to address affordable housing.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. A key objective for the Provincial Government is to stimulate the development of affordable rental housing by the private, public and non-profit sectors. Through the Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing, 1,133 units will be created province-wide by 2014 with total investment of approximately $67.8 million. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

“Recent effects on the housing market in some areas of this province are not lost on this government,” said Minister Hedderson. “The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation will continue to work with all levels of government and interest groups to ensure affordable housing initiatives continue to advance.”
