Social Housing Units Renovated in Central Region

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) continues its annual modernization and improvement program this summer with more than $132,000 in renovations to homes in central Newfoundland.

“Through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, the Provincial Government continues to make significant progress with renovating social housing throughout the province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “This work will help improve the quality of social housing for our tenants and enhance neighbourhoods in different communities.”

Gillingham’s Plumbing & Heating Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $59,000 to upgrade two units in Badger’s Quay, including roofing, window, and door replacements, step, deck and ramp upgrades, and basement insulation upgrades which will help make the homes more energy efficient.

“It is a goal of the Provincial Government to increase the quality and energy efficiency of social housing,” said Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North. “Upgrading these units in Badger’s Quay will enhance these properties and ensure that these homes meet the future needs of tenants.”

Platinum Builders received a contract valued at $59,000 to upgrade four units in Bishop’s Falls and Botwood. Work in Bishop’s Falls will include upgrading steps, decks, ramps, walkways and driveways, while homes in Botwood will receive roofing and exterior wall upgrades, new plumbing and fixtures, and various energy efficiency improvements.

“Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is working diligently to renovate social housing in our communities,” said Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits. “These upgrades will help increase the lifespan of the units and help make them more comfortable for families.”

One unit in Bunyan’s Cove will receive roofing and energy efficiency upgrades as J.J. Enterprises is awarded a contract valued at $14,000.

“I am pleased this work will proceed in Bunyan’s Cove, as it will enhance this property and promote its longevity,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “Each renovation made by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation makes a positive difference in the lives of tenants.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
