Social Housing Renovations Continue in St. John’s

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) continues to advance its annual modernization and improvement program with contracts valued at $172,000 to renovate 14 affordable housing units in St. John’s.

“We are making great progress with our 2012 modernization and improvement program, which is renovating and upgrading social housing across the province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “This announcement is another example of how our continued investment is ensuring our units remain comfortable living spaces for tenants today, and into the future.”

G.S. Hunt Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $94,000 to replace roofing on 12 homes on Livingstone Street. A contract valued at $78,000 was awarded to Eastern Siding Systems Ltd. to renovate two units on Brazil Street, including exterior wall, roofing, window, door, step, deck and ramp replacements.

“I am pleased to see these homes in downtown St. John’s will benefit from enhancements through the modernization and improvement program,” said Tom Osborne, MHA for St. John’s South. “This renovation work will rejuvenate these homes and ensure that we maintain the availability of affordable housing.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012: People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
