Upgrades Underway on Prospero Place Homes

Renovations to affordable housing on Prospero Place in St. John’s will be completed as Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) awards Maher’s Construction Ltd. a contract valued at $844,000 to renovate 10 units. This work will complete upgrades to all 24 affordable housing units at this location.

“This investment will see substantial upgrades and renovations, ensuring these units continue to be comfortable homes for our tenants,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “Along with $1.1 million in previous upgrades to the neighbourhood, this investment demonstrates the Provincial Government’s commitment to upgrading affordable housing in the City of St. John’s.”

The work will include brick replacement, window, door, siding, roofing and landing replacements, as well as basement insulation and ventilation system upgrades. The anticipated completion date for the work is March 2013.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a 10-year vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2012 - People and Prosperity allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
