Highway Twinning and Road Work Continue near Corner Brook

Work to extend the divided highway from Massey Drive interchange to Lady Slipper Road continues as the Department of Transportation and Works calls a tender for the construction of a bridge over Corner Brook Stream.

“Completing a four-lane divided highway on this section of the Trans Canada Highway will bring a significant upgrade to the transportation network in the region,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “I am pleased we are moving forward with this next step of the construction project, as it will complete an important phase of the work, and will improve traffic flow for businesses and the travelling public when finished.”

This tender will see the construction of a new three-lane, 24-metre long, bridge over Corner Brook Stream as part of the divided highway extension. No impact on traffic flow is expected as part of the construction of the bridge.

“I am pleased to see progress on this project with the construction of a new bridge over Corner Brook Stream,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “This is a growing area of the province with changing transportation needs, and so extending the divided highway to the ring road is a welcome enhancement.”

Also included in this tender is rehabilitation work on the Corner Brook Ring Road overpass at its intersection with the Trans Canada Highway. This work will include concrete repair and repaving of the bridge deck. Traffic flow on Route 450 will be maintained with one open lane for the duration of the work.

“This government is committed to investing in transportation infrastructure throughout our province, as evidenced by substantial road projects such as this,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “These key projects will benefit the western region for years to come.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $310 million for infrastructure initiatives including an investment of $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
