Improvements Planned to Main Gut Bridge
Travellers in the Bay St. George area will soon see improvements to the Main Gut Bridge on Route 490 in Stephenville Crossing.
“This government is focused on investing in transportation infrastructure in order to meet the needs of the people of this province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “The Main Gut Bridge is an important regional link, and once complete, this work will help ensure the longevity of the bridge for years to come.”
Work will involve the removal of the concrete handrails and the installation of steel rails. The bridge curbs will be resurfaced and the existing asphalt will be removed. Any necessary repairs to the bridge deck will be carried out before repaving. Traffic flow will be maintained with one open lane throughout the project.
“I am pleased this work will be carried out to rehabilitate the Main Gut Bridge,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for St. George’s - Stephenville East. “This is an important piece of infrastructure that connects our communities and these improvements will benefit residents in the Bay St. George region.”
Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $310 million for infrastructure initiatives including an investment of $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
