New Pavement Planned for Corner Brook Area

Sections of the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) near Corner Brook will see new asphalt this construction season as the Department of Transportation and Works prepares to call two tenders for the work.

“The Trans Canada Highway is an important corridor on the west coast for residents, travellers and businesses,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “These tenders will see substantial new pavement on the highway near Corner Brook, marking a great start to the road work we will carry out across the province this year.”

Milling and repaving will take place in both the east and west bound lanes of the TCH from Pynn’s Brook weigh scales west for approximately 29 kilometres. Work will also take place on a section of Little Harbour Hill and on a section of Pynn’s Brook Hill between Deer Lake and Pynn’s Brook weigh scales.

“This section of highway is an important link in this region, not only for commuter and commercial traffic, but also for the Deer Lake Regional Airport,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “This work will enhance our regional transportation system and I am pleased it will be completed this season.”

In a separate tender, repaving will take place on the TCH from approximately two kilometres west of the Ring Road overpass in Corner Brook heading west for approximately 9.3 kilometres. The work will also include the realignment of Quarry Road east of the former weigh scales. This project will be cost-shared with the Federal Government through the Building Canada Fund.

“Investing in our roads and highways is a priority for this government, and this parcel of work will ensure a quality transportation network is maintained in this region well into the future,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity – Responsible Investments for a Secure Future provides $310 million for infrastructure initiatives, including an investment of $165.1 million to enhance provincial road and bridge infrastructure, supplemented by $60 million in Federal Government funding, for a total investment in 2012-13 of $225.1 million.
