Bridge Construction Set to Begin on CBS Bypass

The construction of the Conception Bay South (CBS) bypass extension continues this season with a tender called by the Department of Transportation and Works to construct a bridge over Lower Gullies Brook on Route 2.

“With this tender, we will make progress developing this important piece of highway infrastructure,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “The CBS bypass extension project will enhance the regional transportation system in this area of the province, and I am pleased to see the project advance.”

The tender is for the construction of a two lane, 44 metre bridge that will span Lower Gullies Brook, as well as a future walking trail. As construction of this bridge is on a section of highway not yet open to the public, it is not anticipated that traffic flow will be impacted.

“Enhancing this local transportation route will ease traffic congestion to the benefit of drivers in this area,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Conception Bay South. “I look forward to seeing the project completed, and to seeing improved traffic flow through Route 60.”

The CBS bypass extension is being cost-shared by the Provincial and Federal Governments through the Canadian Strategic Infrastructure Fund. This project is in keeping with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s unprecedented commitment to improving and upgrading roads and bridges through its multi-year infrastructure investments valued in excess of $5 billion.
