Window Replacements Underway for NLHC Housing Units

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) is investing $197,000 to replace windows on dozens of social housing units in the St. John’s and Mount Pearl areas.

“The Provincial Government is committed to maintaining affordable social housing that meets the needs of people with low incomes,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “These window replacement projects will help modernize these homes and make them more energy efficient, to the benefit of tenants.”

Eastern Siding Systems Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $138,000 to replace 161 windows on NLHC units, and Coastal Building Products and Services Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $59,000 to replace 94 windows. The anticipated completion date for the work is June 2012.

The Provincial Government recognizes the importance of leading by example in responding to climate change and improving energy efficiency. This commitment is evidenced through two separate, yet complementary, action plans focused on climate change and energy efficiency, Charting Our Course: Climate Change Action Plan 2011, and Moving Forward: Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2011.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of people with low incomes and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador also allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

NLHC is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
