Renovations Continue for St. John’s Social Housing Units

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded contracts valued at $102,500 for the completion of upgrades to three social housing units in St. John’s.

“This work is part of our ongoing modernization and improvement program to upgrade affordable housing units,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “Extensive renovations have been carried out across the province and I am very pleased with the positive impact this work is having.”

G.S. Hunt Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $86,000 to make enhancements to two units on New Pennywell Road. It is anticipated the work will be completed work in July 2012. Avalon Design & Installations has been awarded a contract valued at $16,500 to renovate a unit on Barry Place. The anticipated completion date for this work is April 2012.

“Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is investing substantial funds to renovate its rental units,” said Tom Osborne, MHA for St. John’s South. “The work will ensure the units are upgraded for continual use, and will promote the well-being of tenants for years to come.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of people with low incomes and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador also allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

NLHC is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
