Affordable Housing Units Renovated in Corner Brook

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded a $79,000 contract to EJB Contracting Ltd. to upgrade four social housing homes in Corner Brook. The houses on Pinegrove Avenue will receive new siding, windows, doors and ventilation systems.

“This investment will significantly upgrade these houses and increase the comfort of the residents,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “This work is one of many modernization and improvement projects ongoing throughout the province, and highlights the Provincial Government’s commitment to maintaining quality levels of affordable social housing for people with low incomes.”

The anticipated completion date for this project is May 2012.

“This work will make meaningful enhancements to these homes, to the benefit of tenants,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board and MHA for Humber East. “This adds to the substantial investments that Newfoundland Labrador Housing Corporation has been making in Corner Brook over the past few years as it continues to upgrade the provincial social housing portfolio.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of people with low-income and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador also allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

NLHC is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
