Request for Proposals Announced for Labrador Freight Service

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is requesting proposals for the provision of a freight vessel service for coastal Labrador for a 15-year term.

“The freight shipping service is vital for the communities of coastal Labrador and this government is committed to ensuring a high-quality service well into the future,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This request for proposals will allow us to secure a modern vessel in the long term, which will meet the needs of coastal Labrador, and will ensure service continuity for years to come.”

The request for proposals includes provision of a two-week freight delivery cycle from the primary ports of Lewisporte and Goose Bay to ports north to Nain. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is also requesting a vessel that is less than 15 years old as of June 2012 for the duration of the contract, however a vessel that is more than 15 years old may be used for up to the first three years of the contract, after which time a newer vessel must take over the service.

“This freight service is an integral part of everyday life for residents and businesses on the Labrador coast,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “I am pleased this request for proposals will allow the acquisition of a vessel and contract that will ensure the people of coastal Labrador receive the best service possible.”

The deadline for submissions is April 16, 2012.
