Tender Called for New Bridge in Central Newfoundland

A tender has been called for the construction of a replacement for the E.S. Spencer Bridge over the Terra Nova River in central Newfoundland.

“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to maintaining quality transportation infrastructure on our roads and highways,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Every construction season we hit the ground running with improvement projects in every corner of Newfoundland and Labrador, and I am pleased to see the progress being made at this location in central Newfoundland.”

Approaches for the new bridge were completed on the Trans Canada Highway in fall 2011. This provides for the realignment of the road leading to and from the new bridge. Traffic flow will be maintained on the current bridge while the construction of a permanent bridge is completed.

“I am pleased we can move this project forward and secure a contract for the new bridge construction,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “This project will help maintain a safe and secure highway network in our region.”

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2013 and will see a new 75 metre bridge over the Terra Nova River.

Work to be completed under this tender will be cost-shared with the Federal Government under the Building Canada Fund.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides more than $1 billion for provincial infrastructure investments. This includes $216.4 million in Provincial Government funding for road and bridge improvements throughout the province. This funding is supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, providing for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
