Bridge Work Planned for Howley Access Road

A tender for the construction of a temporary bypass of the Sandy Lake Bridge on Route 401 in western Newfoundland has been issued, as the Department of Transportation and Works prepares to replace the existing bridge.

“Building a temporary bypass is the first step in the replacement of the Sandy Lake Bridge,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Our government is committed to investing in road and bridge infrastructure and this project on the Howley Access Road will pave the way for a new bridge that will strengthen the transportation network in this region.”

The work will involve the construction of a paved bypass around the existing bridge, including a temporary single lane panel bridge. A traffic light system will be put in place to manage traffic control at the bypass. The project is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2012.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides more than $1 billion for provincial infrastructure investments. This includes $216.4 million in Provincial Government funding for road and bridge improvements throughout the province. This funding will be supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, providing for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
