Social Housing Upgrades Begin on Bell Island

Five social housing properties on Bell Island are being refurbished as Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation continues to advance its annual modernization and improvement program.

“We are achieving great results through the annual modernization and improvement program with respect to maintaining affordable social housing throughout the province,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “This work on Bell Island will enhance the longevity of these properties and will make affordable housing options available into the future.”

The units are located in the Town of Wabana on Fourth Street, Fifth Street, Steve Neary Boulevard, Quigley’s Line and Normore Crescent. The work includes interior plastering and painting, flooring replacements, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, and general repairs to walls, doors and windows. Ken-Mar General Contractors Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at $35,000 to refurbish the properties. The project is scheduled to be complete in late March.

“The restoration of these housing units will provide more people with a safe, comfortable place to call home,” said David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East - Bell Island. “Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation continues to make significant investments and improvements to its portfolio throughout the province, and I am delighted to see these upgrades on Bell Island.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released by the Provincial Government in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of people with low incomes and helping create healthier communities. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador also allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
