Morris Academy Receives Community Capital Grant

The Morris Academy School Council has received a $15,000 grant to help develop the play area and purchase new playground equipment through the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grants Program.

“The Community Capital Grants Program ensures that financial support is available to develop recreation and sport infrastructure,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The enhancements to the play area and new playground equipment will cater to a wider age-range of students and children and will provide them with an opportunity to have fun while engaging in physical activity.”

The Morris Academy School Council is among the many community-based organizations, schools, municipalities, and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“Morris Academy is a vibrant school community with active and engaged families,” said Steve Kent, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement and MHA for Mount Pearl North. “I am proud to support the School Council's efforts to improve the school grounds and to develop an outdoor classroom. We need to encourage children to get outdoors more often and be more active.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $8.6 million to support recreation and sport in the province.

“Learning continues outside the classroom in venues such as playgrounds where kids come together throughout the day,” said Paul Lane, MHA for Mount Pearl South. “Playgrounds are a reminder to all of us that providing access to safe recreational spaces helps make kids happier, healthier, and ready to learn.”

Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
