The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Four Provincial Boys Volleyball Tournaments This Weekend

Four high school provincial boys volleyball teams will be declared champions this weekend.

Nine teams will be competing in the Boys A Volleyball tournament, which is being hosted by Valmont Academy in Kings Point. Competing in Division A are the host, Valmont Academy, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Bonne Bay Academy (Woody Point) and William Gillett Academy (Charlottetown). Division B teams include Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls), John Watkins Academy (Hermitage), Grandy’s River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), and St. Lawrence Academy. Games begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday and will continue all day Friday, with the opening ceremonies scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Friday. Round robin games start again at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday until 11:00 a.m. with the crossovers. The championship game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The 2A Boys Volleyball Provincial is being hosted by Labrador Straits Academy in L’Anse au Loup. Competing in the Letters Division is the host, Labrador Straits Academy, Canon Richards High (Flower’s Cove), Southwest Arm Academy (Little Heart’s Ease), Cape John Collegiate (Lascie), and Belanger Memorial (Doyles). The Numbers Division include Cloud River Academy (Roddickton), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), King Academy (Harbour Breton), Phoenix Academy (Carmanville), and Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay). Games begin at 4:00 p.m. Thursday and continue all day on Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m. Round robin games continue on Saturday at 9:00 a.m and followed by the crossovers and championship game.

Eight teams will be competing in the Boys 3A Volleyball tournament being hosted by Tricentia Academy in Arnolds Cove. Competing in Division 1 include the host, Tricentia Academy, Jen Haven Memorial (Nain), Templeton Academy (Corner Brook) and Botwood Collegiate. Division 2 teams include Roncalli High (Avondale), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Pearson Academy (Wesleyville), and Pasadena Academy. Round robin games begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday and will continue all day. Games begin again on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. followed by the crossovers and the championship game.

Ten teams will be competing for the Boys 4A Volleyball title hosted by Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor. Games for Division A will be playing at the Exploits Valley Intermediate School. Teams in Division A are Clarenville High, Gonzaga High (St. John’s), Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John’s), Gander Collegiate, and Stephenville High. Division B games will be played at Exploits Valley High School. Division B teams include the host, Exploits Valley High, Queen Elizabeth Reg. High (Foxtrap), Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), and Corner Brook High . Games begin at 1:00 p.m. Friday and will continue all day and will begin again at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Following the round robin games will be the crossovers 30 minutes after round robin ends and championship game.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
