The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Five Provincial Girls Volleyball Tournaments this Weekend

Five high school provincial girls’ volleyball teams will be declared champions this weekend.

Five teams will be competing in the Girls A Volleyball tournament, which is being hosted by Eric G. Lambert School in Churchill Falls. Competing are the host, Eric G. Lambert School, J. C. Erhardt Memorial (Makkovik), Lake Melville High (North West River), William Gillett Academy (Charlottetown) and John Watkins Academy (Hermitage). Games begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, with the opening ceremonies scheduled for 5:15 p.m. and games beginning again at 6:00 p.m. Games resume at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the first place team playing the fourth place team at 2:30 p.m. followed by a game seeing the second place playing the third place team. The championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The 2A Girls Volleyball Provincial is being hosted by Cloud River Academy in Roddickton. Competing in the Green Division is the host, Cloud River Academy, King Academy (Harbour Breton) Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay). In the Black Division are Random Island Academy, Gill Memorial Academy (Musgrave Harbour), Labrador Straits Academy (L’Anse Au Loup) and Copper Ridge Academy (Baie Verte). Games begin at 4:30 p.m., Thursday and will continue throughout Friday, starting at 9:00 a.m. Cross-over games start at 9:00 a.m., followed by the championship game.

Eight teams will be competing in the Girls 3A Volleyball tournament being hosted by Glovertown Academy. Teams will be competing in a two division round robin. Division A teams include the host, Glovertown Academy, St. James Regional High (Port Aux Basques), Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge), and Menihek High (Labrador City). Division B teams include Pearson Academy (Wesleyville), Holy Trinity High (Torbay), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls) and Pasadena Academy. Round robin games begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and continue all day Friday and Saturday morning until 11:30 a.m., followed by cross-over games and the championship game.

Ten teams will be competing for the Girls 4A Volleyball title hosted by Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts. Teams in Division A are the host, Ascension Collegiate, Bishops College (St. John’s), Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John’s), Holy Spirit High (Manuels) and Corner Brook High. Competing in Division B are Stephenville High, Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Mount Pearl Senior High, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap) and Clarenville High. Games begin at 12:00 noon on Friday and will continue until 12:00 noon on Saturday. Cross-over games begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday and the championship game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Girls Fair Play Volleyball Provincial is hosted by Corner Brook High. Six teams are competing for the title. Teams include the host, Corner Brook High, Pasadena Academy, Clarenville High, O’Donel High (Mount Pearl), Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown) and Carbonear Collegiate. In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
