Minister Congratulates Skater Kaetlyn Osmond on Gold Medal

This past weekend, Kaetlyn Osmond from Newfoundland and Labrador was awarded a gold medal for her performance at Skate Canada International’s Grand Prix. The Honourable, Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, extended congratulations on Ms. Osmonds remarkable accomplishment.

“Ms. Osmond demonstrated incredible skill and delivered an excellent performance on Saturday,” said Minister French. “She is a fine example of the tremendous talent we have in Newfoundland and Labrador. I congratulate her on an outstanding achievement and wish her every success in the future.”

Ms. Osmond, a native of Marystown, made provincial history in January when she became the first Newfoundlander to win a medal in a senior women’s competition at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick. She is also the first Canadian woman to win gold at Skate Canada International since 2009.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Osmond participated in the Provincial Enrichment Program offered by Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador, which is a provincial sport organization delivering skating programs for fun, fitness, and achievement.

“We are pleased to deliver quality skating programs to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Bev Power, Chair of Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador. “It is important that we continuously develop our sport and encourage members to reach their full potential.”

A key objective of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy (2007), Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, is to increase opportunities for involvement and participation in recreation, sport and physical activity. Since the launch of the strategy, more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
