The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Three Provincial Boys Soccer and Two Girls Slo Pitch Tournaments Being Held this Weekend

Three high school provincial boys soccer and two provincial girls slo pitch teams will be declared champions this weekend.

Eight teams will be competing in the Boys 3A Soccer tournament, which is being hosted by St. Lawrence Academy. Competing in the Blue Division at Centennial Field are the host, St. Lawrence, Indian River High (Springdale), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and Menihek High (Labrador City). Competing in the White Division at School’s Field are Holy Trinity High (Torbay), Laval High (Placentia), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Stephenville High. Games begin at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and will continue all day on Friday. The crossovers will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Field.

The 4A Boys Soccer is being hosted by Holy Spirit High in Manuels. Six teams will compete in a two-division round robin play beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday on Topsail and Mount Pearl Fields and will continue all day Friday. Competing in Division 1 will be the host, Holy Spirit High, Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John’s) and Corner Brook High. Division 2 teams include O’Donel High (Mount Pearl), Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John’s) and Marystown Central High. Round robin play continues all day on Friday, and crossover games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed with the championship game at 7:00 p.m. at Topsail Field.

Four teams will be competing in the Boys 2A Soccer tournament being hosted by St. Joseph’s Academy in Lamaline. Teams include St. Joseph’s Academy, Valmont Academy (King’s Point), St. Joseph’s All Grade (Terrenceville) and Holy Name of Mary Academy (Lawn). Games begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and continue all day Friday. Semi-finals are 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Saturday and the championship game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

Eight teams will be competing for the Girls 3A Slo Pitch title hosted by E. A. Butler All Grade in McKays. Teams in Division A are the host, E. A. Butler All Grade, French Shore Academy, Dorset Collegiate and Fogo Island Central Academy. Competing in Division B are Dunne Memorial (St. Mary’s), Appalachia High (St. Georges), J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and Marystown Central High. Games begin at 3:00 p.m. Thursday and will start at 8:00 a.m. Friday and will continue all day Friday and up to 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Crossover games begin at 1:00 pm. and 2:15 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game slated for 3:30 p.m.

The Girls 4A Slo Pitch Provincial tournament is being hosted by Gonzaga High in St. John’s. Teams competing in the A Division are the host, Gonzaga High, Roncalli Central High (Avondale) and St. Kevin’s High (Goulds). Teams in the B division are Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Holy Trinity High (Torbay) and Stephenville High. Round robin games begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and continue all day. The crossovers begin at 9:30 a.m. with the championship game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
