The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Two Provincial Girls Soccer and Two Boys Slo Pitch Tournaments Being Held This Weekend

Two high school provincial girls soccer and two provincial boys slo pitch teams will be declared champions this weekend.

Eight teams will be competing in the Girls 3A Soccer tournament, which is being hosted by Indian River High in Springdale. Competing in the A Division are Clarenville High, Stephenville High, Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay) and Mobile High. Competing in the B Division are Menihek High (Labrador City), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Gander Collegiate and the host, Indian River High. Games begin at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday and will continue all day on Friday and Saturday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

The 4A Girls Soccer will converge on Holy Spirit High in Manuels. Six teams will compete in a two-division round robin play beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. Competing in Division 1 will be the host, Holy Spirit High, Gonzaga High (St. John’s) and Corner Brook Regional High. Division 2 teams include Mount Pearl Senior High, O’Donel High and Marystown Central High. Round robin play continues all day on Friday, and crossover games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed with the championship game at 7:00 p.m.

Eight teams will be competing for the Boys 3A Slo Pitch title hosted by Bay D’Espoir Academy in Milltown. Teams in Division A are the host, Bay D’Espoir Academy, Pearson Academy (Wesleyville), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie) and French Shore Academy (Port Saunders). Competing in Division B are Baltimore High (Ferryland), John Burke High (Grand Bank), Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge) and Templeton Collegiate (Corner Brook). Games begin at 8:00 a.m. Friday and will continue all day Friday and up to 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Cross over games begin at 1:00 pm. and 2:15 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game slated for 3:30 p.m.

The Boys 4A Slo Pitch Provincial tournament is being hosted by Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts. Teams competing in the Blue Division are Roncalli Central High (Avondale), Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Stephenville High and Gonzaga High (St. John’s). Teams in the gold division are the host, Ascension Collegiate, Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Holy Trinity High (Torbay) and Clarenville High. Round robin games begin on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at both the new and old fields and will continue until the 9:30 a.m. game on Saturday. Crossovers begin at 11:40 a.m. and the championship game is scheduled for 3:20 p.m.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
