The North Atlantic Air Gun Challenge Returns to Newfoundland

The Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association will host the 4th North Atlantic Air Gun Challenge (NAAGC) in the Frank Zahn High Performance Marksmanship and CSSA Training Facility on October 5–7. The Frank Zahn range is located in room PE-1002 in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, Memorial University St. John’s Campus.

The NAAGC is an Atlantic Canada Regional Championships founded in 2009. First hosted at the Frank Zahn range it has moved from province to province, across Atlantic Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador Shooting Association, Shooting Federation of Nova Scotia and the Royal New Brunswick Rifle Association, agreed to work together to produce competitive Atlantic Canadian athletes in time for the 2011 Canada Winter Games. This collaboration resulted in three medals for NL shooters and a half a dozen more place in the top eight, a significant improvement for the region. The effects of this event were so positive that the provinces have agreed to continue this in the run up to the 2015 Games.

The first NAAGC saw 16 athletes coming to NL to shoot the first all electronic competition in Canada. Every year since then the match has grown. This year a record 27 shooters will take part, with 12 coming from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Six of the athletes competing this year, five from NL alone, are members of the Canadian National Team.

Athletes fire two qualifying rounds between 17:00 hrs and 21:00 hrs on October 5, 08:00 and 19:00 hrs on October 6 and 08:00 and 14:00 hrs on October 7. Finals begin Sunday afternoon at 14:00 hrs and continue to 17:00 hrs. There are finals for Men’s Rifle, Women’s Rifle, Men’s Pistol and Women’s Pistol. Finals will have the top four shooters in each group go head to head, to determine the 2012 champions. Both the qualifier and finals are open to the public.
