Excitement Mounting for the 2013 Labrador Winter Games

The 2013 Labrador Winter Games are just over six months away and planning is in full swing. The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs, were at the Labrador City Arena today to present a cheque for $500,000 in support of the upcoming games.

“The Provincial Government is proud to support the Labrador Winter Games, which focus on community pride and Labrador’s diverse cultures,” said Minister Dalley. “It is great to see these games continue to promote the development of sport and recreation programs in Labrador communities, encourage and enhance cooperation and understanding among different cultures, and revive participation in sports and activities associated with traditional lifestyles.”

The Labrador Winter Games are held every three years in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with more than 400 athletes representing up to 30 Labrador communities to celebrate the sporting and cultural heritage of Labrador.

“I am pleased to see our government’s continued support for the Labrador Winter Games,” said Minister McGrath. “These games are both unique and very special for Labradorians, bringing sport and culture together in a celebration of pride and tradition.”

The 2013 Labrador Winter Games will be held from March 3 to March 9.

“The board is delighted once again to have the Provincial Government’s support as we progress with planning this exciting event,” said Joe Goudie, Chair, 2013 Labrador Winter Games Board of Directors. “We look forward to making the games, first held 30 years ago, both enjoyable and memorable for all participants involved.”

The games support the goals and strategic directions of the recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador.
