Recreation Area Being Developed in La Scie

Cape John Collegiate in La Scie will build a new playground with the support of a $15,000 grant provided through the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grants Program.

“In addition to the new playground, the redeveloped area will also be home to some outdoor fitness equipment for use by all residents,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “It is encouraging to assist in this project as it promotes active living while providing the community with a safe place to participate in enjoyable physical activities.”

Cape John Collegiate is among the many community-based organizations, municipalities, schools, and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest capital grant program investments.

“I am very pleased that the Provincial Government is committed to active living,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale. “The playground will encourage recreation and physical activity among our children and youth. The whole community, and region, is well served with this project.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $8.6 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
