Citizens Encouraged to Submit Nominations to
Provincial Historic Commemorations Program

Individuals and groups are invited to nominate a significant person, place, event, or tradition of historical importance in Newfoundland and Labrador through the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program. The deadline to submit a nomination is June 30, 2012.

“Our province is filled with numerous historic treasures worthy of recognition,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “We are proud of our distinctive culture and we are eager to share it with the country and the world. This program helps us celebrate our tangible and intangible heritage and the incredible uniqueness that defines Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Launched in 2008, the establishment of a Provincial Historic Commemorations Program was among the objectives outlined in the Provincial Government’s cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture (2006).

“The Provincial Historic Commemorations Program is an exciting opportunity to nominate aspects of our heritage and culture that we, as citizens, feel are significant to the province as a whole,” said Françoise Enguehard, Chair of the Provincial Historic Commemorations Board. “The program is intended to make residents of the province more aware of their history and culture and to support activities that will celebrate and commemorate our collective heritage.”

Nominations will be accepted from individuals, communities and organizations in the following categories: Place of Provincial Significance, Event of Provincial Significance, Tradition Bearer, Distinctive Cultural Traditions and Practices, and Person of Provincial Significance. For further criteria, guidelines and nomination applications, visit www.seethesites.ca/commemorations-program.aspx or call 709-729-6901.

Since the release of the cultural strategy, the Provincial Government has invested over $56 million in new funding in the cultural and heritage sectors.
