Jillian Keiley Congratulated on Prestigious Appointment

The Provincial Government congratulates Jillian Keiley on her recent appointment to the position of Artistic Director for the National Arts Centre’s English Theatre in Ottawa.

“Ms. Keiley has dedicated her professional life to creating, producing, and promoting theatrical drama in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “She has achieved much success in this province and is a credit to the rich artistic talent of Newfoundland and Labrador. By receiving this prestigious appointment, Ms. Keiley will have the opportunity to share her creativity and talents on the national stage. I congratulate her on the new appointment.”

Ms. Keiley is a native of the Goulds, graduate of the masters program in theatre from York University, and founder of Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland Theatre. In 2004 she was awarded the most lucrative honour in Canadian theatre, the Siminovitch Award which is presented annually to a playwright, theatre director, or designer who has made a significant contribution to the Canadian theatre scene.

Since 1995, Artistic Fraud has successfully produced many dramas that have received national and international acclaim, including the award-winning Tempting Providence which tells the story of nurse Myra Bennett, as well as Oil and Water which profiles the courageous rescue of Lanier Phillips off the coast of Newfoundland in 1942.

“The Provincial Government recognizes and supports the work of artists in this province, such as Ms. Keiley,” said Minister Dalley. “They help define who we are as a people, and are vital contributors to the cultural community and economy of this province.”

The Provincial Government’s support for culture and heritage in this province has included an investment of $56 million since the development of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006.
