Media Advisory: Katarina Roxon Kicks Off Busy Paralympic Trials with a Gold Medal

(Montreal, QC) - Katarina Roxon of Stephenville made the necessary adjustments from her morning swim and came back in Tuesday night’s final to win the gold medal in the women’s 100 butterfly at the Paralympic swimming trials presented by RBC.

Katarina Roxon, ranked second after prelims, clocked 1:16.24. She finished ahead of Morgan Bird of Calgary and Jenna Skieneh of Windsor, Ontario.

“I made a lot of mistakes this morning,’’ said Ms. Roxon, 18, a member of the 2008 Paralympic team. “I tried to fix those quirks and it was pretty good. The time wasn’t the greatest for me but I just got to work on it. I still have five more events to and I’m going to push to get the times I need.’’

Coach Leonard Roxon commented, “The Paralympic team will not be selected until late June. All that it means at this point and time is that when she makes the team she is qualified to and will be swimming the 100m Fly in London at the 2012 Paralympics. So overall it was a fantastic day for us. The way she won the race was also very impressive!”

Competition runs until Sunday at the Olympic Park Sport Centre. Preliminaries are at 10:00 a.m., and the finals are at 7:00 p.m. each day. Sportsnet will carry finals live each evening.
