Sportfest Encourages Youth to Try Different Sport and Recreation Activities

Young people of all ages are invited to participate in the second annual Sportfest, taking place at the Techniplex in Pleasantville, May 10-12. The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, joined Sport Newfoundland and Labrador to launch Sportfest, today.

“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to partner with Sport Newfoundland and Labrador for Sportfest and to contribute $25,000 to support this event,” said Minister Dalley. “Sport and physical fitness play an important role in the lives of our young people. Sportfest gives them an opportunity to experience the wide range of sport and recreation activities available in our province. I understand last year’s inaugural event was a great success, with 30 interactive booths and participation from almost 5,000 people, including 3,200 students.”

Sportfest will offer seven different sport zones featuring a variety of activities and information from many of the provincial sports organizations. This event is open to the public. Schools, families, and youth of all ages are encouraged to participate.

“We are very grateful to the Provincial Government for providing funding to Sportfest again this year,” said Doug Fowler, President of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. “Sportfest is an important program for Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. The event provides young people with the chance to come out and try sports and activities to which they may not have otherwise been exposed.”

The venue for Sportfest has changed this year from the PowerPlex on Crosbie Road to the Techniplex in Pleasantville in order to accommodate the wide range of interactive sport and fitness activities as well an increased number of participants.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador represents 53 provincial sport organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador by providing programs and services in the promotion of sport and physical activity. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
