Team NL Takes Six Medals at the 30th Canadian Air Gun Grand Prix

With three days of shooting behind them, eight Newfoundland athletes, all members of the NLSA, finished shooting the 30th Canadian Air Gun Grand Prix, in Toronto. Two senior shooters and six juniors all competed in the 10-metre ISSF Air Rifle event, with two juniors who went on to shoot in the cadet competition. This match saw competitors from across Canada, the USA, India and Russia.

On the men’s side of the international competition, Ben Taylor had an outstanding weekend. He fired 1146 44X in the qualifier to finish first in the International Junior class and 2nd overall. He then went on to the finals and slipped into 3rd place overall.

Dave Woolridge finished 5th in master class and 9th overall shooting 1127 42X. Woolridge had tied for eighth spot but was finally ranked 9th behind Michigan’s Ethan Cook’s 43 centre 10s. Dave Ficken finished 4th in expert class with an 1103 32X. Ficken, Woolridge and Taylor formed an open team to take 2nd in the team event behind Ontario.

Newcomer William Dalton finished 7th out of 11 with a score of 1003 16X in the sub-junior class. This is his second competition ever and he had a remarkable two relays, his first was 37 points above his previous personal best and his second relay was first match and 20 point up from his first relay. It is very remarkable to have a 57 point jump in barely two months of training.

In the women’s event, Harris took bronze in sub-junior and placed 13th overall with her score of 745 27X. This was Harris’s first medal at this event ever. Teammate Samantha Marsh came in 4th in the expert class shooting 750 21X. Marsh was in a three way tie for eighth spot after the qualifying round, missing out on the finals by four centre 10s. In the end she was in 10th place overall.

Finally Austin Didham and Michaela Burke competed both in the cadet event designed to prepare them for their upcoming competitive season and in the ISSF event. This is the second time cadets have taken part in this competition. In the cadet event Burke shot 535 to finish second in her class and Didham fired 503 finishing 8th in a field of 23. Burke and Didham were also members of the gold winning cadet team event. Burke fired 613 6x out of 800 to place 11th out of 12 in ISSF international junior. Didham finished 9th in the ISSF international junior class with a score of 880 3X.
