Winners of Heritage Day Poster Contest Announced

National Heritage Day is celebrated annually across the country every February to recognize the importance of Canada’s history and heritage. In this province, the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador honoured the occasion during an event held today at the Fluvarium at which the winners of the 2012 Heritage Day Poster Contest were announced.

“The Heritage Day Poster Contest is an excellent way for students to learn about our province’s history, more specifically our built heritage and historic places,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “It is vital that we recognize the work of those who preserve and protect our province’s rich history such as the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Over 1,400 posters from students in 85 schools were submitted for this year’s contest.

Katie Butt, a Grade 6 student at St. Francis School in Harbour Grace, was named the overall winner for her poster featuring the Rorke Store in Carbonear. The winning submissions at each of the other grade levels were Amanda Whelan, Grade 10, Holy Spirit High School, Manuels, CBS; Stephen MacDonald, Grade 7, St. Francis School, Harbour Grace; and Stephanie Skinner, Grade 3, Jakeman All Grade, Trout River.

“This contest provides a great opportunity for young people to discover and appreciate our province’s history through artistic expression,” said George Chalker, Executive Director, Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. “The huge number of entrants this year is proof that students in Newfoundland and Labrador are aware of heritage places in their communities and value these places as links to our province’s rich past.”

Poster contest judges were Margaret Walsh Best, Artist and Art Educator; Deborah Barnable, Visual Artist and Consultant; and Lara Maynard, Folklorist.

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador is a non-profit Crown agency which was established in 1984 to stimulate an understanding of, and an appreciation for, the architectural heritage of the province.
