Smart Holiday Shopping Encouraged

As the holiday season approaches, there is a sharp increase in purchases and it is important that consumers take the time to understand the individual policies of retailers, especially in relation to returns and refunds.

“It is important to be aware of a retail outlet’s return policy,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL. “Retailers are free to determine their own policies, and consumers will find a wide variety of terms and conditions from store to store.”

To avoid potential confusion and inconvenience, shoppers should take note of any related store signage and take care to confirm the details of the retailer’s policies at the point of sale.

For example, depending on the store and the particular item being purchased, consumers could find that refunds are only given within a certain timeframe or with the original packaging still intact. If the item was purchased at full price but then returned during a store sale, consumers without a receipt may only be entitled to a partial refund, equivalent to the sale price.

“Be sure of the store’s return policy, check your merchandise for defects before you leave, and save all receipts just in case,” said Minister McGrath. “These actions will minimize potential return issues should you decide to go back.”

Consumers should exercise the same level of diligence when shopping online. In addition to being familiar with the retailer’s policies, online shoppers should be wary of scams and other fraudulent activity. Verify that the transmission of any personal information including credit card details during online purchasing is encrypted and that the vendor is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau.
