Residential Tenancies Act Consultations Announced

Service NL announced today the launch of consultations for the Residential Tenancies Act and Regulations. The consultation will run for 45 days concluding on November 7, 2012.

“I am pleased that we are beginning this important consultation process, and that the public will have an opportunity to comment on this act and how it can be improved,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Service NL. “The Residential Tenancies Act is a piece of legislation which affects so many people in the province as either landlords or tenants, and it is important to make sure that we are keeping the act up to date with today’s housing market.”

The Residential Tenancies Act governs the relationship between landlords and tenants. It affords protection for both groups, and sets out key requirements for notice periods, payment of rent and evictions. The act also provides a mechanism for the mediation and adjudication of disputes. It was last updated in 2000.

The general public will be invited to take part in the consultation process either in person or via electronic or regular mail.
