Oceanside Roofing Inc. and Supervisor Plead Guilty to Charges

Service NL announced today that a Flatrock company and a company director/supervisor have pled guilty to violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The charges arose from an inspection conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch at a construction site at Castle Bridge Subdivision in St. John’s on June 28, 2012.

Oceanside Roofing Inc. had been charged with allegedly failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace and failing to ensure that a fall arrest system was adequately secured to an anchorage point or lifeline. The company pled guilty to the latter charge, while the remaining charge was withdrawn. The fine to be paid is $2,000, plus a victim fine surcharge.

The company director/supervisor had been charged with allegedly failing as a supervisor to ensure another worker wore fall protection, failing as a worker to ensure that his own fall arrest system was secured to an anchorage point or lifeline, and failing as a worker to use the fall arrest system provided. The supervisor pled guilty to the first two charges, and was fined $750 as a supervisor and $500 in his role as a worker, plus a victim fine surcharge. The third charge was withdrawn.

The pleas and sentencing took place on September 7, 2012 at Provincial Court in St. John’s
