Data Privacy Day - January 28, 2012

Data Privacy Day is recognized by privacy professionals, corporations, government officials, academics and students around the world. It aims to highlight the impact that technology is having on our privacy rights and underline the importance of valuing and protecting personal information.

The 6th International Data Privacy Day will be celebrated on January 28, with events held in major centers across Canada in an effort to raise awareness and generate discussion about data privacy and access rights and responsibilities.

This year’s overall theme highlights the importance of limiting the amount of personal information shared online with the slogan, “Less is more. Some things are better left unshared.”

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) will host an Information Fair at the Avalon Mall (Gap Court) between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 30. The provincial Privacy Commissioner, Ed Ring, will be on hand between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Additional internal events and presentations to highlight data privacy and protection are being held as well.
